And Now For Something A Little Different

And now for something a little different from me.
There are no railway posts from me the other day as we’ve been away.
Saturday we drove to Whitby for our annual trip.
I really want to offer up some tips here about Whitby.

Whitby Abbey is a great place to visit and this year we finally got to the Illuminated Abbey event. It was good and I even managed to take my tripod in with me.

NYMR, for me, is the best heritage railway in the country.  Great trains, nice staff and stunning scenery.

In Whitby station is The Waiting Room. It’s a super Micro pub serving beers, wines and great ciders. Personally we all had a Cider Bat with 1/3 of a pint of three different ciders.

For fish and chips forget the magpie and trenchers as I personally feel they are over priced for what they sell. If you want what I consider to be the best go over the old swing bridge and just up on the right is Hadley’s restaurant and takeaway. Well priced and really great food.
Other nice places to eat are A Passage To India by the station, Botham’s (either the one on Baxtergate or on Skinner Street) have meals and snacks and for a really GREAT pub lunch visit The Duke Of York on Church Street.

I’ve stayed overnight, for a week and fortnights in Whitby over the years. Based on these are my top places to stay (in no particular order).
The Chiltern Guest House – An excellent B&B and apartments. We’ve not used the apartments yet. THe coupole that run the Chiltern are lovely and always make you welcome. The breakfasts are really lovely.
The Angel Hotel – A Wetherspoons  hotel and really good. We’ve stayed twice now and both times we’ve been impressed. It’s on the Quay side and close to the station.
Discovery Accommodation has a number of apartments for self catering and we stayed in 2018. If you get one on Silver Street then there is limited parking BUT there is a local parking just up the street.
The Corner Guesthouse – It’s been a fair few years since we stayed her but we liked it.
